Trimble GPS Pathfinder Office version 5.40 Update “001″

Trimble GPS Pathfinder Office® version 5.40 Update “001″, released December 4, 2012,  introduced support for the Trimble Positions™ ArcPad extension.

  1. **Note: that this update also improves Post Processing of GPS data files recorded on SiRF receivers such as Trimble Juno® 3, Juno S series, and Nomad® G series handhelds. In particular, rare occurrences of large errors in post processed positions shortly after connecting to the GNSS receiver have been improved.
  2. Depending on the settings of GPS Pathfinder Office this update should install automatically or the user may need to install it manually from the GPS Pathfinder Office software by selecting:

Help / Check for new GPS Pathfinder Office updates now…” and follow the “Next, Next…..etc”  questions to then download and install the latest update package called “Correct update (PFO 5.40Update 001)“.

Log Now vs. Log Later in Trimble TerraSync

$

0

The Trimble TerraSync software provides two closely-related options for logging GNSS data.

These options differ in their timing of GNSS data collection relative to the start of a feature.

The options are:

  • Log Now – start a feature and simultaneously start collecting GNSS positions.
  • Log Later – start a feature, and start collecting GNSS positions later.

LOG NOW – starts logging GNSS positions immediately.  This is the Default data collection setting in TerraSync.  To verify that you are set to LOG NOW click on OPTIONS in theCollect Features” screen.

  1. Be sure that your Accuracy indicator in the upper right of TerraSync Collection screen is where you want it to be before starting your feature.
  2. If you have a steady hand you can collect GNSS data and fill out your attributes at the same time.  If your Accuracy indicator in the upper right meets your required Accuracy level for  “In the Field or Post Processed”  after averaging 20-30 positions then click on the PAUSE button in the lower right to not record anymore GNSS Positions.
  3. Now you can fill out your attributes.
  • By clicking PAUSE you will not introduce anymore GNSS positions in case you need to move your screen to see it better (which would change the angle of the GNSS antenna and introduce poor GNSS positions)  or if you needed to physically move to get out of the way of oncoming traffic etc.  You can always go back to the location of your Feature and log more GNSS positions if necessary.
  • Once PAUSE is selected you can then concentrate on filling out the rest of your attributes.
  • After you have completed the attributes you can click DONE to save the GNSS averaging and the attributes per your feature.

LOG LATER – You are in control of when the GNSS positions are logged.   This allows you to start a feature, enter attributes and collect GNSS positions later.  Using Log Later allows you concentrate on filling out your attributes and to give the GNSS receiver more time to initialize and lock onto quality GNSS Satellites.   Once your GNSS receiver has initialized your accuracy indicator should be reading a stable number of “In the Field or Post Processed” in the upper right of your screen per you liking.

  • To set LOG LATER click on OPTIONS in the ”Collect Features” screen and then select LOG LATER and a dot will show up to the left of LOG LATER.

Log Now vs Log Later in TerraSync

**Log Later comes in handy for use with lines and area features too.   The benefit of this action is to prevent an unnecessary build-up of vertexs at the start of your line or area feature which would then in turn create more editing in GPS Pathfinder Office and or in your GIS or CAD software.

In Review – the benefits of using Log Now vs. Log Later in TerraSync:

  • Use the Log Now / Log Later function to pause and resume logging when appropriate.
  • It is useful to control GNSS logging to prevent unwanted positions being logged to the feature.

DMA 10×10 Global Geoid for TerraSync 5.20 thru 5.41 and GPS Pathfinder Office 5.20 thru 5.40 has “Incorrect Vertical Coordinates”

$

0

GIS Field Software: Incorrect Vertical Coordinates

See the Support Note for TerraSync 5.2x and up, GPS Pathfinder® Field toolkit versions 1.0 to 1.30 and GPS Pathfinder Office 5.2x and up.

See this Trimble MGIS Support Note per a fix for the DMA10.ggf “Geoid DMA 10×10 (Global)”:   GIS Field Software: Incorrect Vertical Coordinates

Or go to the Trimble GPS Pathfinder Office Support home page. Click on “Support Notes/v5.x Support Notes/Coordinate System Issues.  Scroll down about 1/4 of the way till you see:  ”GIS Field Software: Incorrect Vertical Coordinates”.

The Support Note reads as follows:

GIS Field Software: Incorrect Vertical Coordinates:

Recent versions of Trimble GIS software are able to use geoid models interpolated with either WGS-84 (global) or a local ellipsoid. Using the incorrect interpolation can result in significantly different vertical coordinates.
In addition, the default DMA10.ggf file in the recent versions of GIS software is unable to be adjusted in the interpolation method due to a corrupt byte.

Problem:

If the DMA10.ggf file is used, vertical coordinates may be incorrectly interpolated. The DMA10.ggf file that is used in recent Trimble GIS software versions is interpreted as a local ellipsoid rather than WGS-84. This can result in large vertical coordinate differences from previous versions of software.
The DMA10.ggf file included with the software is also unable to be adjusted in the Geoid Model Configuration Utility due to a corrupt byte.
The following software is affected:
• TerraSync™ software versions 5.20 to 5.41
• GPS Pathfinder® Field toolkit versions 1.0 to 1.30
• GPS Pathfinder Office software versions 5.20 to 5.40

Solution:
Download the latest version of the DMA10.ggf and set the interpolation method to WGS-84 (Global). Then copy and paste the updated DMA10.ggf file to your handheld device and, for GPS Pathfinder Office and TerraSync desktop installations, to your desktop computer.
1. Download the latest version of the DMA10.ggf file here: DMA10.ggf file
2. Open the DMA10.ggf file in the Geoid Model Configuration Utility available here: Geoid Model Configuration Utility
3. Set the interpolation method as desired.
4. Save the DMA10.ggf file:

  • To your Windows Mobile handheld device in:  \Program Files\Common Files\Trimble\GeoData.
  • To the desktop computer: * For Windows® 7, in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Trimble\GeoData.

* For Windows XP, in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Trimble\GeoData.

Even if you are only using Geoid09 or 12A in North America it’s still a good idea to keep your other Geoid options all up to date.

**Stay tuned for a future blog post about Geoid09 and Geoid 12A.

From the Trimble Positions Software Suite Development Team Blog:

Trimble Positions Desktop add-in

  • Built-in Mobile Cache creation and synchronization – Integrated support for creating and synchronizing the Mobile Cache without needing to use the Esri Mobile toolbox. This streamlines the “desktop” workflow within the Trimble Positions solution.  You’ll note that the ‘Check for New Sessions’ button has been relabeled ‘Handle Sessions’ and now has a context menu.  Also, there is a new entry in the context menu that opens when you click ‘Create…’ on the Projects screen.  We tried to keep the workflow consistent with other project types…by starting in the Projects screen.
  • Map extent used to sort base stations when creating a profile – Allows you to sort the base station list by proximity to the current map extent when creating a Processing Profile.  This will be the default ‘Show Base Stations Closest to’ behavior when you open the ‘Select Base Station’ form. You’ll also note some improvements around how we display the currently selected base station when you want to edit an existing profile.
  • Citrix and roaming profiles support – Supports the concepts of roaming profiles and per-user configurations on the desktop. This is useful in larger enterprise organizations where software applications and user configurations are centrally managed.  Per-machine configurations are also still supported.  You’ll see this in the re-designed Configuration tool but rest assured that your existing configuration will work just fine (it’s per-machine).  You’ll also note that the log files are now stored in the roaming folder within your user profile’s application data folder.
  • Base station management support – Supports base station management, including updating the CBS List from the Trimble FTP server, loading of user-defined base stations defined and used in GPS Pathfinder® Office and Trimble GPS Analyst™ extension, and saving of user-defined base stations defined in Trimble Positions Desktop add-in. These utilities are available within the Configuration tool.
  • Issues Addressed – There is a good list in the Release Notes and we believe we’ve addressed the big ones: connections to the desktop database on Windows XP should now be reliable, post-processing with DAT files no longer requires a NAV file, and floating Desktop add-in licenses are now released properly under additional scenarios.
  • Simple and complex offset support - Supports feature geometry data collection using simple and complex offsets. This includes support for simple left-/right- offsets along a path or perimeter and complex distance-bearing offsets for point features or polyline and polygon vertices.  You’ll see new menu items in the data collection screen.  Workflow might be a little tricky here, but only until you get the hang of it: start point collection before starting a point offset; start a line offset before collecting a stream (or vertex) for a polyline/polygon.
  • Laser rangefinder support – Supports the Trimble LaserAce 1000 and LTi 360B laser range finders.  You’ll see a new section in the GNSS settings screen to select the rangefinder model and port.  Once you have a laser rangefinder connected, pressing the button on it will automatically populate the fields in the point (and line!) offset forms if you have them open.

A few quick notes on installation

  • Trimble Positions Desktop add-in : uninstall the old version first, then install the new version; the existing desktop database configuration (and hence all of your projects, processing profiles, etc.) should remain intact.
  • Trimble Positions Mobile extension & Trimble Positions Mobile Project Center extension : uninstall the old Trimble Positions extension version (if doing it manually, you need to include the “Trimble GNSS Server” component on the handheld as well), uninstall the old Esri ArcGIS for Windows Mobile version, install the new Esri version, then install the new Trimble Positions extension version; your existing mobile projects, and their Trimble Positions settings, should work just fine.
  • Trimble Positions ArcPad 10 extension: uninstall the old version first, and then install the new version.
